The Goodreads Book Tag

I’m off on a holiday tomorrow, but before leaving I thought I’d finally catch up on some tags and (very belatedly!) do this Goodreads Book Tag. Thanks to Kirsty @ Kirsty’s Book Reviews for tagging me! I’ve been looking forward to this one because I’m a massive Goodreads fan, so here goes:

What was the last book you marked as ‘read’?

Book Cover: Illuminae

Illuminae by Amie Kaufman and Jay Kristoff

What are you currently reading?

Book Cover: Crooked Kingdom

Crooked Kingdom by Leigh Bardugo (as an audiobook)

Book Cover: A Darker Shade of Magic

A Darker Shade of Magic by V.E. Schwab (as a paper book)

What was the last book you marked as TBR?

Book Cover: Scar Night

Scar Night by Alan Campbell (because I saw it recommended by Emily on Embuhleeliest as an underrated but awesome book!)

What book do you plan to read next?

Book Cover: Red Queen

The next audiobook I listen to will probably be Red Queen by Victoria Aveyard

Book Cover: Troubled Waters

The next hard copy book I read will probably be Troubled Waters by Sharon Shinn (I think it was a recommendation from Anjali @ Anjugation – but it was so long ago I’m not entirely sure. Anyway, I finally got around to buying it recently!)

Do you use the star rating system?

Most of the time. Sometimes if I can’t decide on what to rate a book, or if it’s been ages since I read it and am no longer sure, or if I would have given it 3 stars or less but didn’t want to hurt the author’s feelings (I’m a softie), I just don’t rate it.

Are you doing a 2017 Reading Challenge?

Yes – I’m going to read 40 books this year, same as last year. I’m actually hoping to read a bit more than that, maybe closer to 50, but I figured it’s better to aim low and overshoot than aim too high and disappoint myself.

Do you have a wishlist?

I have an Audible wishlist for audiobooks, as well as a wishlist on a German bookseller site that has a nice big store in my city (though I buy the books in English).

What book do you plan to buy next?

Book Cover: The Black Prism

For audiobooks, probably The Black Prism by Brent Weeks (though I choose from my wishlist on a whim with every audiobook purchase so it could end up being something else!)

Book Cover: Song of Blood and Stone

Although I usually prefer paper books, I might make an ebook my next non-audiobook purchase. I’ve heard good things about Song of Blood and Stone by L. Penelope, which is a self-published fantasy novel that seems to be only available as an ebook… so that’d be my next ebook pick!

Do you have any favorite quotes? Share a few.

My favourite is this one by Terry Pratchett, because it’s clever and it makes me smile every time I read it:

“Give a man a fire and he’s warm for a day, but set fire to him and he’s warm for the rest of his life.”
― Terry Pratchett, Jingo

Who are your favorite authors?

I may be missing a few that I’ve forgotten to add, but here are the current favourites listed on my Goodreads page (I’m allowed to have lots of favourites, right?):

Kristin Cashore, Leigh Bardugo, Maggie Stiefvater, Pierce Brown, Laini Taylor,
Brandon Sanderson, Garth Nix, Kim Wilkins, J.K. Rowling, Roald Dahl, Ernest Cline, Terry Pratchett, C.S. Lewis, J.R.R. Tolkien, Robin Hobb, Chuck Wendig, Juliet Marillier, Amie Kaufman, Sarah J. Maas.

Have you joined any groups?

Yes, I joined the ‘SciFi and Fantasy Book Club’, ‘Addicted to YA’, and the ‘Goodreads Librarians Group’ (I became a librarian because I was too obsessive to ignore some incorrect entries I saw!). However, I confess I’m not actually an active member of any of these. I guess I keep thinking one day I’ll start participating and joining in some of the discussions but so far I’ve haven’t gotten around to it… just too much else going on.

I Tag:

But if you have already done this tag or aren’t keen on it, no pressure!

Oh, and in case anyone wants to follow or friend me on Goodreads, here’s my page.

    • No worries! I’ve also heard great things about A Darker Shade of Magic so I’m excited to be finally reading it – am only a short way in but so far so good. And glad I could share the quote, it’s a hard one to forget once you’ve seen it 🙂

  1. The Black Prism is great- it was one of my favourite books this month! I loved Illuminae too; so many good books on this list! I’m just about to start Six of Crows so I really hope I enjoy it as much as everyone else seems to!

      • I think I’m 16 pages into Six of Crows and I like it so far! I will say, it took me 60-70 pages to get into The Black Prism and probably to 150-200 before I was loving it, but it is definitely worth it!

  2. Hey thanks for the tag!! 😀 I was looking for something to post about today and you’ve definitely helped me out, haha. I’m so happy you’ve taken interest in Scar Night – if you like it, I definitely recommend continuing the series. The second book ‘Iron Angel’ has one of my favorite fictional characters ever in it – the whole series is worth it for him, haha.

I’m currently listening to the Black Prism audiobook right now – it’s great!! The narrator is spectacular, I love him. I hope you enjoy it!!

    • I had originally been debating whether to listen to or read the Black Prism so I’m glad to hear the narrator great, I will definitely listen to it then!! And I’m looking forward to figuring out who this favourite character of yours in Iron Angel is 🙂

  4. ooh gonna have to check out scar night now… And what did you think of Illuminae? And are you enjoying Darker Shade of Magic and Six of Crows? I’d love to hear your thoughts! Ahh so many of my favourite authors on your list!!! And that’s one of my favourite quotes!!! Thank you so much for the tag!!

    • No worries! I really liked Illuminae (I gave it 4 stars). Even though I found the interaction between Kady and Ezra annoying at times, and I’m a little sick of the virus/zombie thing in stories, there were enough other unique elements (including the unusual style) that I didn’t mind, and the big twist toward the end was pretty amazing/emotional! Also it was very suspenseful and I liked the illegal mine premise… and AIDAN of course 🙂 So I think I’ll be picking up the next book at some point!

As for Six of Crows, I adored it and it’s on my favourites shelf now (I just loved the characters and how different the story was to most high fantasies I’ve read, not to mention how suspenseful it was) and I’m liking Crooked Kingdom so far. A Darker Shade of Magic is also great – haven’t quite finished it yet though.

Have you read Six of Crows? I know you read the others you mentioned because I’ve seen your reviews 🙂

      • Yay so glad you liked it!! Ahh I get that- it got a little tiring at times. And I can understand that- for me, as someone just getting into sci fi, it didn’t feel too overdone, but I get that if I had to read loads like it I’d get bored fast! And the twist and AIDAN was amazing!! Awesome!! Ahh that’s amazing- I’m so excited to read that one- haven’t had a chance to pick it up yet. But yup I’d read the others 🙂

        • Yes I think one of my favourite things in sci-fi stories is coming across intriguing new premises and situations, and because I’d seen the ‘rogue ship AI’ and ‘zombie virus’ ones before in films I was a tiny bit disappointed – but as I said the book used them in interesting ways so it wasn’t predictable and I really enjoyed it – I suppose I am just a bit fussy when it comes to sci-fi premises 🙂

I hope you enjoy Six of Crows!! I’ll be keen to read your review if you write one.

        • Ah yes I do understand that for sure. Yeah definitely- even things that have been done before can be done in new and interesting ways sometimes! (it’s what keeps me coming back for more to be honest)
Thank you- I’m very excited to give it a go when I get the chance!
